Cooking Oil and Grease Recycling at the Green Project

The Green Project Starts Cooking Oil and Grease Collection for Biodiesel
The Green Project now collects used cooking oil and cooking grease to be used for biodiesel. The oil and grease will be given to Operation REACH to be converted into biodiesel.

Did you know that nearly 100% of cooking oil and grease can be recycled into biodiesel? Once converted, biodiesel provides a renewable, nontoxic, and clean-burning alternative to fossil fuels.
Want to get involved? Start by collecting your old cooking oil and grease in a sealable container. Bring it to The Green Project (2831 Marais Street) between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Saturday. A staff person will help you with a  tax receipt for the value of your donation. It’s as simple as that.
Questions? Email Beth at bstelson@thegreenproject.org or call (504) 945-0240 ext. 2#.

Some Exciting Green News!

Anti-Paint Dumping Campaign

The Green project, in cooperation with Tulane University Center for Public Service, Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, and the Sewage and Water Board, is waging a campaign against illegal dumping in storm drains. No Waste Sign

On November 14, 2010, 100 Tulane students will march across areas of the Marigny, Bywater, 7th Ward, St. Roch, and St. Claude neighborhoods to spray “Drains Directly to Lake” on storm drains and flier about the environmental and public health hazards of illegal dumping.

Paint and many other household chemicals are often household hazardous waste. However, many people do not know how to properly dispose of them. Through this campaign, The Green Project hopes to significantly decrease hazardous waste run-off and increase  public awareness about our paint disposal services through the Green Project’s paint recycling center.

Trailer Trash Initiative At Your Front Door
Recycling should be accessibility to everybody, and that is precisely what The Trailer Trash Initiative promotes. This brand new project will pick up your recycling from your home for a donation if you live in the Bywater, Marigny, or French Quarter. The best part… it’s all done by bike. No recycling trucks, no wasted petroleum!

The Newly Formed ReUse District

On November 4, the New Orleans City Council will officially recognize 7th Ward, Bywater, Marigny, St. Claude, and St. Roch neighborhoods as The ReUse District in New Orleans and as the first “reuse district” in the country.

Heading to the New Orleans Fringe Festival for some fantastic theater? Make sure to stop by The ReUse District Art Yard on Press Street in front of the Fringe’s Free-For-All tent and box office. Members of The ReUse District will bring all types of reused materials to be transformed into creative sculptures by YOU! Check out The ReUse District website for more details or visit the New Orleans Fringe Fest’s schedule for a complete list of happenings.
